Collection comprises correspondence and literary manuscripts documenting the experiences of American medical missionaries Frederick and Myra Scovel, who served the United Presbyterian Church in China and India from 1930 to 1959. Correspondence includes 69 letters, 1930-1958, from the Scovels to Dr. Scovel's mother; six diaries written by Dr. Scovel, 1933, 1937, 1945-1946, 1959; a carbon copy of part of the journal kept by Myra Scovel during their internment by the Japanese, 1941-1942; and manuscripts, proofs, and correspondence related to four of thirteen books by Myra Scovel about her missionary experiences, The Chinese ginger jar (1962), I must speak: The biography of Augustine Ralla Ram (1961), Richer by India (1964), and To lay a hearth (1968).

Dr. Frederick Gilman Scovel (1902-) and Myra Scott Scovel (1905-1994) served the United Presbyterian Church as medical missionaries in China from 1930 to 1951 and in India from 1953 to 1959. In China, the Scovels worked at Bachman Hunter Hospital in Tsining, Shandong, China and remained there for fifteen years until they were repatriated in 1943 after a period in a Japanese internment camp.
